Quackery in Medicine in the 1930’s

Quackery In Medicine in the 1930’s

To say that the field of medicine has come a long way would be a DRASTIC understatement. I am always interested in the so called “miracle cures” and as we go back in history there are a lot of them. Recently I was reading an article about an oddly named street here in California, and it lead me to the gentleman who the street was named after.

The street is “XXYZX Road” in San Bernandino, and the origins are that of a Curtis Howe Springer who was an old-time radio evangelist at the turn of the century. As his life path unfolded he became a doctor in his own head, and spent many hours convincing others of this fact. Deciding to move west, he got over 12,000 acres of desert to build a hot springs, 60-room hotel, spa, mineral baths, a radio studio, and a church. Well, long story short, he began using this show to sell cures and Springer himself was convicted for selling junk “cures”.

The Adventure that was Jennifer turning 41

14,965 Days Later: Jennifer Turns 41 – A Couple Day’s in July

Jennifer 1st photo Each year I get older but the transition into my 40’s has been far more difficult than I originally anticipated.

I realized that shortly after I turned 40 last year, I became aware of my own mortality and that time on this planet is limited, it is special and one day can change your world.

To say that I was dreading my birthday this year would be an understatement. None the less, Jason took a couple of days off work and with the determination that is uniquely Jason he set out to give me an enjoyable, memorable and fun couple days.

5 Reasons to Visit Sun Bum’s Concept Store

5 Reasons To Visit Sun Bum’s West Coast Office & Concept Store and Beach Combo Giveaway!

Sun Bum StoreI could be one of the luckiest people in the world – I live right in the middle of a surf town – Encinitas, California.

If you have never heard of our town let me share a couple of facts with you – the main artery is the Coast Highway 101. Taking this iconic and scenic route is a favorite of Jason and I’s, and also a wonderful place to truly take in the wonder and true “vibe” of this surf town. With a population of almost 60,000 people, almost someone you encounter knows a mermaid or two.

My favorite thing about my town is the diversity I encounter and see daily. This is a town where you can not judge a book by its cover and if you do, then you are the naive one. Everyone here is friendly and there is no judgement for cutting out of the office at 3PM to hit the waves. This is a town that embraces beachy waves – in the sand or on a head of hair.

Taking all this into account it is no wonder that Sun Bum chose Encinitas as the location for its West Coast offices and Concept Store. Being that it was a mere couple miles down the 101, I decided it was time to support this newest addition to our town.

Here are my 5 reasons you have to stop in next time you are in Encinitas!

5 Things to include in your Cat Emergency Kit

5 Things to Include In Your Cat Emergency Kit

Pet Emergency Kit ViewCalifornia is currently going through a heat wave and suffering from an increase in fires. Since the threat of fire is something that many people face as a reality it got me to thinking about my own emergency plan. While Jason and I are prepared, we also want the cats to be prepared.

It has been a goal of mine for quite some time to prepare a emergency kit for the cats and I decided to take this increase in fires as the motivation I needed.

While many people know the typical things to include in a emergency kit, I began thinking of the items that most people do not consider adding.

To follow is my list of 5 items that everyone should include in their emergency kit.

To the Loom: Ocean Inspired Blanket

Ocean Inspired Blanket

Starting the ProjectRecently I received the Martha Stewart Loom Kit to review. At the time I was not sure what I wanted to create but then inspiration struck – I would loom a blanket! I decided that it would be ocean and wave inspired since I live close to the coast.

I headed over to my local Walmart and looked at all the available yarn colors and as I was standing there I saw a pretty blue/turquoise variegated yarn. From there I chose colors within that same family as well as 1 contrasting color.

Here is my supply list: Martha Stewart Loom Kit, Red Heart Super Saver Accent in Pool, Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in Delft Blue, Turqua, Macaw, Royal and Grey Heather.

MLooming Step oney plan is to use 2 colors of yard, using the square-shaped frame, with each side containing 24 pegs (total of 96 pegs around), and looming the two together.

I can already see it will be important to make sure my yarn does not get twisted and remains as flat as possible. Also, I know from my practice runs that as it gets closer to the end of the second yarn, the tighter the weave becomes.

So with those things in mind my goal is to make this blanket large enough that both Jason and I can use it while movie watching or use it as a blanket on chilly nights.

Our morning at the Oceanside Harbor

Celebrating A Special Mom at the Oceanside Harbor

Harbor 2This past Saturday Jason and I spent our morning at the Jolly Roger in Oceanside celebrating the moms in our life. In attendance was Jason’s mother Sharon, his aunts Joni, Janie and Keri, as well as the matriarch of the family – Grammie Helen. Also in attendance was were a couple of the single cousins.

Jolly Roger OceansideGrammie Helen is the true definition of a matriarch – she raised 5 kids which consisted of 2 boys (Jerry and John) and 3 girls (Joni, Janie and Julie). As her life took its twists and turns, and her husband built the family business, she instilled values and love in her 5 kids. I have had the honor of being a part of this family for 7 years now, and each year as the family grows, so does the love.

Need a box? Look in your freezer

Turn a Corn Dog Box into Functional Storage

Stamps 1Anybody who knows me knows I am constantly looking for ways to turn trash to treasure. I have a TON of craft supplies and really not a lot of space in which to store it in, so since space is a commodity I am always looking for creative uses of the space that is available.

We love corn dogs around here, and the cardboard boxes they come in are actually a good quality of cardboard! I have a ton of stamps and they needed a home. I have been saving these corn dog boxes and using them in my store-room and then it came to me: RECOVER THEM!!!!

The box is a colorful so I knew I needed either dark paper or thick paper so I would not have any color bleed through.

I chose a green butterfly wrapping paper (from Current – LOVE THEIR PAPER!!)

Corn Dog Coming TogetherI began wrapping it, using two separate pieces of enough paper to wrap a box (the paper, if not on a roll, will come in this size by default). I cut about 5-6 inches off the long side and began wrapping. I folded the edges over the box and taped the entire length of the interior of the box.

In ProcessWhen I was done, this was what I ended up with, and it took me about 20 minutes to wrap the whole thing.
