Hand-Lettering for Everyone: A Creative Workbook Review

Hand-Lettering for Everyone: A Creative Workbook Review and Giveaway

HandWriting for EveryoneAnyone who has read my reviews in the past knows that I am not only a Scrapbooker and card maker but I am a big believer in the art of handwritten cards and invitations. As time passes I notice more and more how younger generations rely on computers and phones as ways of communication. The alternative to this is handwriting and handwritten notes and invitations. I have also noticed a trend that penmanship of the younger generations is lacking while typing skill are increasing. There is an entire art of handwriting and the options within are as endless as they are creative.

It appears as though I am not the only person that feels this way. I recently received the new book by Cristina Vanko titled “Hand-Lettering for Everyone: A Creative Workbook“. This new book has over 220 pages of exercises to get you thinking creatively about your hand-lettering.

What is Hand-lettering exactly? Hand-lettering and handwriting is the art of drawing custom letters utilizing your hand and brain instead of the existing type-facing available. Type-facing is considered a preset arrangement of letters and symbols. This book moves your brain away from this and closer to what sits on the surface creatively.

In addition to many exercises to get the reader comfortable with creative lettering, Hand-Lettering for Everyone: A Creative Workbook is littered with miscellaneous facts about handwriting. The format is easy to understand and is set with examples first, then exercises and then finally letting you off on your own to practice the techniques. The exercises in the book include grids to assist you in creating the perfect size letters and even covers the anatomy of lettering as well as definitions of techniques or concepts. There is ample space to practice the “lessons” without giving you the feeling you paid for blank pages – a perfect balance.

I am about 1/3 of the way through the book and I am already seeing my handwriting change and evolve utilizing these techniques. I would recommend Hand-Lettering for Everyone: A Creative Workbook to artists, crafter’s and anyone else who might like to learn a new way of expressing your personality that does not involve an electronic device!

My writing is a combination of the two. I don’t like the way I write some letters in cursive so I print those.

  2. Julie

I like to call my writing curprint. It’s some weird mash up between the two.

  3. Mary Somerville

I usually hand print. My writing has declined in quality over the years. I expect, from not using it as much- as you mention. Something I need to correct!

  4. Gina

My preference is for cursive, but beautiful hand lettering is such an art… I would love to improve my skills in this area.

  5. Jennifer G

Mine is a mix. Some of my writing looks better in print and some I like cursive.

  6. Liz K

I have to go with handwriting, largely because I never really learned cursive

  7. Robin

I love both and use both almost every day. I never know when I pick up a pen which I will use until I start writing.

  8. JIll

I use both, my hands are arthritic so depends, cursive doesn’t look too nice when my hands are hurting.

  9. Margot C

I like both for different applications. I do hand-lettering on little signs, notes and invitations. I write in cursive for longer things.

  10. Alison Gibb

I perfer hand writing and I look forward to learning how to do it better!!
