Newman’s Own Organic: Product Review and Giveaway
I have a confession – before I started this blog I had an aversion to “organic” products. I believed that they were somehow inferior to their non-organic counterparts. Through the past 12 month of blogging I have discovered that there is nothing “inferior” or “less” about organic products. In fact, many times the thing that makes a product stand out from competitors.
Back about 7 years ago I went to the San Diego Zoo with my now husbands sisters. This was very exciting, as the plan was to drop Jason off at work and meet up with sister #1 at the local park and ride. The plan was to ride with sister #1, and meet up with sister #2 and have lunch and walk around the San Diego Zoo. The first stop was lunch, as none of the accompanying children had eaten yet. The 3 of us had all brought lunch, and sister #2 had brought a bag of “Newman’s O’s” to share with us all. At the time I politely declined because I was happy with my non organic chocolate creme cookies.
Since that day I have gotten to know both my sister-in-laws much better and not only are they wonderful mothers, and family members but they also know their food. Prior to meeting these two, I had not really considered reading the ingredients of packaging. I learned early on that to be in this family, label reading and ingredient awareness matters. This is not a negative in any way, but rather a way that all mothers should adopt.
A brand that was brought to my attention as a good positive company was Newman’s Own Organic. While I was a little bewildered and confused as to why she was such a fan, as soon as I began reading on my own, I realized that Newman’s Own goodness extends beyond just food and into the charitable world.
The products featured in this post were provided to me free of charge courtesy of Newman’s Own. This post may have affiliate links but this in no way will influence the review to follow and all opinions are my own.
I recently received a box of Newman’s Own Organic products for review, and I can honestly say that this was my first time trying many of these items and I found some real good treats in the box. Here are some of the contents:
Licorice Twists: I got 5 flavors of these including Black Licorice, Pomegranate, Strawberry, Sour Apple and Sour Cherry. There were five twists per package. I had never tried these before, and I am a fan! The Sour Apple is in the photo above, and was the first I consumed and the first I have become a new fan of and Jason liked the Strawberry. The only downside to these is they are a little bland, but that is not to say they lack flavor, I just wish they had MORE flavor. The had more of a gelatin type consistency, where i would have liked to see a juicy type consistency. The sour was sour, but could use a punch. Be sure to check out the Pomegranate, Strawberry and Sour Cherry combo!
Super Dark Chocolate Cups: These arrived 6 to a package in two flavors – Raspberry Center and Peanut Butter Center. Let me just say that anything + dark chocolate = a win! The Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter were really good, and the Super Dark Chocolate Raspberry had tartness to it. I think my favorite had to be the Peanut Butter Cups, the dark chocolate was even better because I froze these therefore consumption.
Fig Newman- Strawberry: I had had the other alternative to these, the brand named version ad they were not as good as these were. The last time I had these I was in the single digits, and I remember that enjoyed them, so thought i would love an organic version. I was right, these are really good and tasty. Even a week later, with proper storage they are still fresh and tasty.
Peanut Butter Cups and Peppermint Cups: I will start with the Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups – there were so good! I would have to say they are better than their mass produced counterpart. I decided to freeze these so that I could preserve them between having cups – I would only have one of each to make them last. As for the Dark Chocolate Peppermint Cups, it was just as good as you would imagine. The taste was similar to those of the commonly found peppermint treats you find during the holidays each year. An important item to note is that I am usually not a fan of peppermint cups, but these were FANTASTIC!
Original Hermits: These are a soft, spiced cookie that come about 16 to a package. These are the Original Hermits which contain organic sugar, organic flour and raisins. There was a flavor of molasses, and the cookies reminded me of a hybrid of a molasses raisin cookie and a Fig Newman – over all good. I had less of these per sitting, but that could be due to the fact they are larger and a bit heavier for cookies.
Chocolate Chip Cookies: I will admit that these did not see Jason arrive home – I received the box of goodies at about 1:00PM and by 6:15 they were scraps in a bag. I LOVED these and devoured them. While my waist line may not be happy, my taste buds are! I could not even tell you how many cookies were in this bag, because I was was not watching, I was just grabbing. I can not recall the last time I obliterated a bag of cookies before Jason had a chance to try them.
Chocolate Alphabet Cookies: I had put these off to the side and honestly had forgotten about them until Jason grabbed them off the shelf. I have never been a huge fan of pure chocolate cookies, despite having a deep love of chocolate. I really conceited and tried these when I opened them to take photos and saw how cute they were. I will admit and say I did dig in the bag and spelled out messages, and despite me being on my 4th decade on this planet, I had a lot of fun.
Pop’s Corn – Light Butter: If you like popcorn, you will like this popcorn. I enjoy easy snacks that are filling, yet do not get into my hands and stain whatever project I am working on. Popcorn has always been a simple filling snack that is adaptable to either my sweet or savory tastes. When I want a more savory snack I pull out the BBQ seasoning and mix it in, when I want sweet flavoring I pull out the cinnamon/sugar mixture and mix it in. Either way this is a delicious snack and I will be purchasing this again!
