Stunning Braids Review

Stunning Braids Review and Giveaway

Stunning BraidsWhen I was young, the only thing I wanted in life was long hair, but it was the one thing that was a constant no in my house. Many people thought that the reason I was not allowed long hair was that my single father would not know how to braid it. Of all the reasons that existed, this was not one of them and in fact my father was quite adept at dealing with longer hair.

When I finally had the opportunity for longer hair, I was in Jr. High School and wanted to look like my friends. I decide perm my hair for the next 5 years, and rarely adding braids to the style directory in my head. I would attempt to braid my own hair, but it never looked quite right. I was in my early 20’s when I finally figured braiding out, albeit a simple french braid is the most that ever was done.

Now that I am an adult, I ride that fine line of looking silly in braided pigtails but not looking together enough, and I think I finally found a book that will help me not cross that precarious line – Stunning Braids: Gorgeous Hairstyles for Any Occasion from Work to Weddings.

Stunning Braids: Gorgeous Hairstyles for Any Occasion from Work to Weddings contains 25 different ways to braid your hair. Each style has easy-to-follow instructions as well as step-by-step photos. The author, Monae Everett, has been braiding hair since she was a young child and playing with dolls. It was this simple childhood activity that lead her to becoming a celebrity hairstylist and a braiding teacher.

The book is divided into 2 basic sections: basic braids and advanced braids, each of which can be worn for everyday running around, work, proms, weddings, just hanging out and everything in-between. The book lists the “equipment” needed such as bobby pins, brushes and elastic bands. Also explained is the different variations of the “equipment” and why one might be preferred for use over the others.

I attempted to do the “Fish Tail Braid” – I would love to lie to you and say I got it on the first try with the detailed instructions. Again it would be a lie – I struggled. I had just washed my hair, which I later found may not have been the best conditions to try this under, but I steamed on. I put my hair to the side and began the alternation of hair to one side, to the other. At one point, in a moment of wondering if others could do this, I texted my neighbor who responded with something resembling a yes she could do them and she would teach me. While I am infinitely appreciative of her offer, at that moment I had to steam on alone.

It took me about an hour, and endless restarts, but I finally achieved something that resembled the photo in the book:

Jennifer with Completed Fish Tail BraidI am very proud of my accomplishment. I give credit to the book for being clear and concise in direction to allow me to carry out this new braid! That is not to say I am not going to take my neighbor up on her offer, I have the basics down, I just need to learn the tricks!

If you want to expand your style repertoire, I would HIGHLY recommend Stunning Braids: Gorgeous Hairstyles for Any Occasion from Work to Weddings – you will be a pro in no time!

Beachy waves is currently my favorite hair style. I also like the french twist for date/occasional formal nights.

  2. Sharon Kaminski

My favorite hairstyle is braids. You can do so many different things.

I have hair a bit past my waist and I want waves in it so bad. I love how beachy waves look but unfortunately no hairstylist in my area wants to take on perming my hair 🙁

My own hair is naturally curly, so I usually just wear it natural. But my daughter has super straight, very long hair. She loves it braided (so do I; it keeps it from tangling) . I know how to braid, but I’m not creative enough to come up with styles on my own. This book sounds perfect for us!

my hair is very short now, a short spike up on top. I used to have permed long hair. The short hair is easier.

I usually love mine in a loose pony tail but since I got my haircut real short, it’s too short for that now. I wear it as a bob.

I usually put my hair in a bun or a low braid (my hair is long and thick;it is easier to put up than keep down). Thank you

On myself? A high messy bun. On my daughter? A french braid (but she rarely lets me do her hair anymore!)
