Hollywood Cafe: Coffee with the Stars Review and Giveaway
I am going to share something that people in my personal life know – I am a walking movie database. For some strange and unknown reason I can remember random bits of movie trivia. There are literally situations in our house where we will be watching a television show, I will hear a voice and just blurt out a random fact. Jason refers to me as “Jennifer Movie Database” because of my extensive knowledge.
I love everything from game shows, to sitcoms to movies. My expertise is people and movies from the late 1980’s to now. I am always looking for books that will support my love of Hollywood and the productions that come out of it. When recently had the opportunity to review Hollywood Cafe: Coffee with the Stars by Steven Rea, I knew this would be a fun journey.
Hollywood Cafe: Coffee with the Stars by Steven Rea celebrates the moments in cinema history where we share a cup of coffee with our heros and heroines. This books allows the reader to thumb through a complete collection of nostalgic black-and-white photos that celebrate screen icons from the Silent era through the eighties.
The movies of today celebrate when they hit a billion dollar opening weekend, and when the use of computer generated graphics makes reality and fantasy one and this books celebrates a time before this era. This book has over 180 nostalgic photos and is of heavy weight, giving this more of a collector and coffee table style book. This book is a nice combination of publicity photos, production stills from original production and fantastic candid photos – my favorite is Lucy and Desi.
As I thumbed through this book, it reminds me of many old movies and where Hollywood got it’s start. I think we need to remember where we began, so we can appreciate how far we have come. If you have a movie buff at all in your life, this book is the book for you to get – I have my copy on my credenza.

My favorite movie from the black and white era is The Hustler. It’s a prime example of black and white being capable of some things that color isn’t (and vice versa). The storytelling style and shots in that film couldn’t have worked in the color era in my opinion.
I have so many favorite movies…but, I think either Goonies or Stand By Me take the cake, because they remind me of my childhood.
