Every Little Thing: A Flat Vernacular Coloring Book Review and Giveaway
When I was in school there was a requirement to “wrap” our books. What this exercise entailed was gathering paper bags and cutting them to the size of the textbook, and with a couple strategic folds and little tape the book would be covered. What resulted was a black space, and a spine to create whatever I chose to think appropriate and thematic for that book.
The best part was the blank canvas and being able to create the cover of my dreams. This normally took longer than and usually detracted from the real purpose of the books. I always went for bright colors, and something inspiring and happy – think rainbows and butterflies.
There have been books throughout my life that I have thought could do well as an outline, and give the reader the ability to color. This long thought of mine has come to fruition with the release of Every Little Thing: A Flat Vernacular Coloring Book by Payton Cosell Turner.
The products featured in this post were provided to me free of charge courtesy of Blogging for Books. This post may have affiliate links but this in no way will influence the review to follow and all opinions are my own.
Every Little Thing: A Flat Vernacular Coloring Book by Payton Cosell Turner is a wistful and magical jaunt into a different world. The name of the book originates from the authors Brooklyn based design studio that is known for their hand-drawn and hand-printed wallpapers. As you thumb through this books it becomes clear that any one of these designs could be an active and potentially colorful wallpaper. Each page has characters ranging from koalas, alligators, lions, cats, snakes, peacocks, butterflies to food.
Another bonus to this book is that the cover comes off and reveals a blank canvas for you to color as you deem appropriate. The book pages are bound together which makes removal of the pages a little more difficult, which might just be easier and neater to leave them in the books binding. Each page is a close mirror image to the opposite page, which lends itself to added creativity.
I think it is important to note that since this is a hand-drawn book the artwork might not be for everybody – there are a lot of animals as well. I loved all the animals and found myself creating stories for each page as I was coloring. I would also recommend sticking to crayons or pencils, as if you use pens it runs the risk of bleeding through and making the coloring of the following page difficult.
During those seemingly long school days I dreamt to coloring my own covers and now this is a an option. This is a fun, different and creative take on the growing adult coloring book trend and if you are looking for a little higher quality coloring book, this 80 page book is for you!
