The San Diego Chargers, The Bolts, The Super Chargers, powder blue uniforms and tailgating, all San Diegan’s have a memory or two from either Jack Murphy or Qualcomm Stadiums of the Chargers playing. I know that I was always a fan because I am homegrown San DIegan and I believe in supporting the home team but only within the past 6-7 years have I learned about the Chargers. My husband Jason was born a Charger fan, his family had tickets on the 50 yard line and Charger season is looked forward to by every family member. Through Jason I have learned why they run, hike the ball or just go down on bended knee.
I always thought that once a city had a team, they had a team, meaning that they could not and would not let that team be lost or moved. I have heard for years that the Chargers did not exercise the option of leaving and kinda thought nothing really of it, I mean why would San Diego NOT have a team. Well the time has come when what I thought could not happen might happen – the Chargers ceasing to play here.
There are many reasons why they maybe should leave, but there are equally, if not more. reasons to stay. I, for one, can not imagine San Diego without our team, it seems like we will be loosing a bit of our home and what comforts that home provides. I am still undecided if I will continue to be a fan if they do leave – the thing I love about them is that they are San Diego, my home town!
Anyone who has seen our house knows that the Chargers have a special place, each room has something special with a nod to not only our favorite color scheme but team. Our bedroom is loving watched over by “Chargie the Charger bear” – which was the first thing Jason ever bought me. Our living room has several versions of the Charger blankets that you can purchase, and my crafts are done with blue and yellow as much as tolerable. The most prized of our Charger treasures is a photo of Jason’s grandfather decked out in front of Jack Murphy Stadium on game day!! This is not to mention the mementos from games, and misc other merchandise – their move would require a clean out of my own.
There are as many pieces to this complicated puzzle as there are questions without solid answers:
- Why has is taken almost 15 years for a NFL team to get a real stadium?
- Is Mayor Faulconer the 1st San Diego Mayor to take the clause (stating the Chargers can leave San Diego Qualcomm Stadium at any time) seriously?
- How do they build a stadium without upsetting taxpayers?
- Where do they build? – The proposed site is the current Mission Valley location
