Stoneridge Orchards: Review and Giveaway
As any regular readers will know I love companies that have a unique backstory and original origins. Let’s travel back to 1960’s in Central Washington and the modern homesteading lottery. What this Homesteading Lottery did was to hold a lottery and chose “winners”. The “winners” of this lottery won 160 acres of land in Central Washington. As luck would have it, in 1962 a gentleman by the name of Karl Dorsing had not only entered this lottery but won. This win allowed him to move himself and his family to Royal City Washington.
Today those 160 acres are what is known as Royal Ridge Fruits. The fertile high desert region of Central Washington was the perfect environment to grow their all natural organic cherries, blueberries, raspberries, apple and pears. In 2010 this 3rd generational family owned and managed company created Stoneridge Orchards. Stoneridge Orchards was created for use as a consumer brand. With the creation of a consumer brand came the addition of a berry mix, dried peaches slices as well as Greek Yogurt covered fruits and Dark Chocolate covered fruits.
Stoneridge Orchards was kind enough to send us an assortment of their dried fruits and chocolate covered fruits for consideration of a review.
Each of these items was received, tried and my opinion is below:
Cranberries: I am a fan of cranberries, and I love to make cranberry bread during the winter holidays. These were used in a granola mix and they were so good. These are whole cranberries that have been dried and were sweet and tangy. The ingredient list is as simple as the products itself and includes cane sugar to sweeten and sunflower oil as well as the cranberries.
Chili Lime Cherries: If I am being honest I am generally not a whole cherry fan – there is something about cherries that have never been particularly appealing to me. That being said, I love Tajin Fruit and Snack Seasoning, and we use it on almost all fruit in our house – it adds a nice punch to otherwise plain fruit. Now despite my natural aversion to cherries these were hearty, despite my dislike for cherries, I loved the seasoning.
Whole Dried Strawberries: We are strawberry fans in our house – we have strawberries with homemade whipped cream at least 3 times a week so we were excited to try a dried version. The first thing I will share is that when you look at these, there is no doubt that they are strawberries. These are whole dried strawberries, and they are really good. I have a couple lingering questions about their use such as if we can soak them and “re-hydrate” them for a macerated strawberry treat. I plan to purchase these again!
Blueberries dipped in Dark Chocolate: Anybody who knows Jason and I know how our love of Dark Chocolate runs deep. The health benefits of blueberries are well known and something that we like to have as a easy snack. Honestly, you can slather dark chocolate on just about anything and we will enjoy it immensely. These were very tasty, especially after we froze them!
Montmorency Cherries dipped in Dark Chocolate: Again, the dark chocolate and despite them covering cherries they were really good. I decided to freeze them and this made them crunchy and cool. If you are a fan of cherries and dark chocolate I would HIGHLY recommend these.
Whole Dried Blueberries: I was really looking forward to trying these as I love blueberries, and I was actually really disappointed. Despite our excitement, Jason and I were disappointed in the overall flavor. When we ate them there was almost a wine flavored after taste, and being that we are not wine drinkers we did not enjoy them. That being said, I imagine you could add them to pancakes, a bread or even add some to a blender for a fruit smoothie and mask the after taste.
Montmorency Cherries: Let me first say that Stoneridge Orchards is the number 1 producer of Montmorency Cherries on the West Coast. These are whole dried tart cherries that are pitted for us (despite this, be careful when eating these, pit parts can still be included). If I was a bigger fan of cherries, i think I would have loved these!.
Whole Dried Berry Mix: This is right up our alley – we love assortments! This mix includes cranberries, cherries, blueberries, strawberries and raspberries. The package has a nice combination of all the berries and I never felt like I was getting more over another one. This is something that we will be purchasing again, as it is an almost perfect snack!
Overall I liked the fruits, especially the chocolate covered fruits. This is a simple, clean snack that kids, adults and everyone in between can enjoy. I love that the company has a simple beginning and they have carried that simplicity to their products.
