My Freaky Saturday seeing Disney’s Freaky Friday at the La Jolla Playhouse
There is nothing comparable to live theater, and musicals are no exception. I have been going to live theater shows at the La Jolla Playhouse since I was a young teenager. I have seen Rent, Shakespeare plays, one man shows and huge ensembles, all from 1st or 2nd row center seats. Now that I am older, my father’s season tickets never go to waste since Jason has the same love of theater I have.
Since we are such live theater fans, when we were asked if we wanted my father’s tickets to Freaky Friday we jumped at the chance. I grew up watching the original movie and then the mid 2000’s version.
I have always loved the story of a mother and daughter switching places, dealing with each other’s problems and finally seeing the value in the other side. I was intrigued and excited to see this story in a musical version.
One of the first things that we saw was that the show had been extended a week, which gave us an instant expectation that this was probably going to be an enjoyable couple hours.
There was a rule that the writer made when she was writing this musical and modern version, she had to know the meaning of something and want to use it herself – no making 40-year-old wanting to be 20 years old.
The musical stated with a very energetic song, and set the tone for the whole show. The mother and daughter actresses were amazing and believable once they switched roles. The show, while based on the original translated well in this modern-day of technology. With one intermission and the second part being a bit less, the musical went by quickly without any major slow times.
I was surprised at the end when the curtain came up and the band was behind the stage the entire time. The sound almost sounded from underneath us, so to see they were on stage all along was a neat reveal at the end
The one thing I noticed was that despite being based on the original in 1972, the core issues and core message is the same. The secrets we keep are ours, we don’t know about someone else’s life until we walk in their shoes and the bonds of family and feelings of empathy remain always.
Both Jason and I enjoyed the show and highly recommend you seeing it if it comes to your town!
The Cleveland Playhouse and Houston’s Alley Theatre are where it isĀ headed next!!
