Sock Club – June 2015 – Review

I have mentioned in the past my love for socks and my terrible propensity for wearing holes into them. I am proud to announce that I think the tide is starting to turn on this horrible habit, and my blog might be the reason. I have found that as a review blogger one of the items I receive for review are socks. I recently received a pair of socks from SockClub.com.

Prior to this interaction I had not heard of Sock Club, which actually surprises me for a couple reasons. The first reason is that this company has been in the online world since July of 2012, and I have not seen any ads or not heard any word of mouth about it. The second reason is that this is an American made product – the socks are designed in Austin, Texas and manufactured in North Carolina and usually these are the businesses that get the attention for being “American Made”. The final reason I was surprised is that the creation of the company is cocktail party story worthy. The company was started when 2 friends bet over a corn hole match, began to think about what they could do with a small fortune and decided the answer was socks – Sock Club was born.

I received a pair called “The Prince”. The socks were packaged in a 8×11 cardboard envelope that was branded with the “Sock Club” name, leaving little to no doubt who the package was from. When I opened the envelope inside I discovered a wrapped brown bag type package with a wax seal in the middle designed as a method of closure. Also included was a letter that was made out to me that explained the inspiration for this month’s sock selection.

The Prince sock is a purple and black sock that is decorated with geometric shapes and the sock is solid black on the sole. These purple and black socks include a black 2 inch band on the upper ankle, with a thin purple 1/2 band on the cuff of the sock. The label stated that the sock is 80% cotton, 16% nylon and 4% lycra. This was a comfortable sock that was thin enough to not add any additional bulk to sometimes already tight fit shoes.

Jason has been patiently wanting meat sticks and cheese for quite sometime and the truth of the matter is that I have never really given meat turned into sticks much thought. I think I have mentioned in the past that I am a cookie monster. I really do love my cookies and will devour almost any flavor and any variety. If I am being honest with you, I actively tried to gain weight and it never happened despite eating entire boxes of crackers before the 12 o’clock in the morning hour. Flash forward to my early 20’s and with adulthood came a drastic change in my metabolism.

This change in my metabolism was as fast and furious as my weight gain. I do not remember actively buying bigger pants or jumping from a size 2 to a size 12. I have been a cookie fan since I was a child, in fact I recently admitted to being a cookie monster since I was young. My favorite cookie memory involves my best friends from youth. Each weekend I would play host to slumber parties and 2:00am cookie making messes. Generally speaking we made chocolate chip, oatmeal or peanut butter but sometimes we would venture into the fancier cookie books and attempt a recipe.

Flash forward 25 years later and I still love baking cookies, as well as convincing my friends to come and help me bake them. The major difference is that my cookie making confidence is much higher than at 15 years old. I love cookbooks and recently was given the chance to review Cookie Love: More Than 60 Recipes and Techniques for Turning the Ordinary into the Extraordinary by Mindy Segal.

This collection is over 280 pages of recipes, cookie making basics that cover tools used and common tricks, as well as measurement conversion charts. This book includes some of the best cookie recipes I have ever heard of including snickerdoodles, smoked almond shortbread with orange blossom and raspberry framboise, cheese board biscotti and many others.

If you are a fan of quality cookie themed cookbooks and unique recipes I highly recommend this book full of “Cookie Love”.

I am a fan of chips with salsa, unfortunately my stomach feels very different about this. As I have gotten older I am sad to report that my stomach and I do not agree on many food decisions. I love scented candles, but have never been a fan of perfumes. The perfumes that I have come across are strong and when applied heavy can burn noses and make people not want to be near the offending smell. I have always seeked and looked for a perfume that can make me smell more natural and less like I am wearing perfume.

The Indochine included kumquat, peach, water lily, jasmine, muguet, vanilla, grapefruit extract, orange and ylang-ylang. The pink colored Acai Rain is made of acai, raspberry, currant, white peach, fresh greens and orange oil.

There are many companies that are creating bars and protein snacks. The common thread in these bars is dates. I will be honest when I say that I know little to nothing about dates, other than their appearance. If I am being really honest I will tell you they have never been high on my list to try as they are visually unappetizing.
