The Honest Kitchen Cat Food Review

The word Honest has been used a lot recently with its inclusion in company names. I think that this is 20150403_201546because the word “honest” evokes trust, warmth and a feeling that, despite being totally different people, you are friends. I think that at times, with the wrong intentions, this can be used to take advantage of the consumer. As regular readers may already know I am a skeptical person by nature and do not easily trust, especially companies. The Honest Kitchen has began to earn my trust, and replace some of the skepticism I currently have against pet food companies.

I love my cats, Maggee and Murfee, they are my husband and I’s buddies and we want them to live the best life they can, for as long as they can. With my advancing age and my own current awareness to what my food is made of, it got me thinking about what my feline family eats.

I had heard about The Honest Kitchen’s cat food while I was at the local family owned pet store while chatting with a fellow animal lover. I wanted something that was made from human grade ingredients and contained no chemical preservatives, which I thought did not exist. I was wrong, The Honest Kitchen cat food is made from 100% FDA human grade ingredients, they use Organic products when they are able to and they use ZERO ingredients from China. Many ingredients are imported internationally such as the chicken they use is a free range variety from Petaluma in California, they use line caught wild Haddock and kelp from Iceland, the quinoa is fair trade from Bolivia, the Organic coconuts are from Thailand and the basil and parsley are grown and imported from Egypt.

20150403_203213Maggee is our adventurous eater in the house, she will try almost anything at least once and often times we find her finishing the food off entirely. I chose to give her “Grace” dehydrated cat food. I chose this flavor because of the ingredients included which included dehydrated cage free turkey, eggs, pumpkin, potatoes, parsley, dandelion greens and cranberries (I think she ate better than us for that meal!). I opened the package and followed the instructions to re-hydrate the previously de-hydrated powder. I waited the 3 minutes for the food to become moist, and then gave it to Maggee. The food, once re-hydrated looked like a paste the consistency of thick white glue. 20150403_203121The one thing I noticed right away was that she had a little apprehension to the new food texture, and after she gave it a good smell, she began to eat. She seemed to enjoy it, although initially was unsure of the texture she continued to eat and shortly after she was done she groomed and proceeded to fall sleep for the next 5 hours. I think that once she adjusts to the different texture, this will be a nice supplement, if not total replacement for her dry food.

As pet owners we want our pets to live as long as possible, and many times pets become family, The Honest Kitchen understands that and treats your pets as family. The Honest Kitchen believes in “pets before profits” and is family owned themselves and also believes our pets deserve the best we can give them. Loving my 4 legged family members as much as I do, it is clear why I would want to support and recommend The Honest Kitchen.
