Stampin’ Up Moroccan Designer Series: DIY Dry Erase Board

Stampin’ Up – Moroccan Designer Series Paper and Washi Tape – DIY Dry Erase Board + Giveaway!

Love is All you needI have been wanting a dry erase board for our house, but I was looking for one in the 8 x 10 size range and preferably with a nice border or frame.

A couple of years ago my father moved out of his house, which meant that the “Wall of Jennifer” would be removed. The wall consisted of every school photo from kindergarten to senior year, with a couple of others added in. When he moved I not only claimed the photos but the frames as well. I was not sure what the plan was for all these random sized frames but I knew someday I would want them.

Since I was unable to locate the dry erase board I wanted, it dawned on me that I could easily make one with that simple frame that used to hold my elementary years. While I was reviewing the latest Stampin’ Up catalog, and when I came across the Moroccan Designer Series of Paper and Washi Tape the project came together in my head.

The products featured in this post were provided to me free of charge courtesy of Stampin’ Up, but this in no way will influence the review to follow and all opinions are my own.

Moroccan PaperThe first step was to look at the Moroccan Designer Series Paper and find a pattern that would be noticeable but subtle. It was important that the pattern was subtle to not over power the writing on the board. The paper has 12 sheets – 2 each of 6 double-sided designs that measure  12″ x 12″ (30.5 x 30.5 cm) each. As an added bonus the paper is Acid free and Lignin free.

Paper SharingI decided on a simple white pattern that reminded me of my French-Moroccan family and took the cardboard from the back of the frame and used it as my template for the size needed. As I placed the cardboard down I was careful to keep the sides lined up, and used a pencil to trace around the shape. I cut the shape and placed it in the frame to ensure proper size and fit.

Frame with paper before washiI settled on a 8 x 10 frame that once housed my 5th grade photo (the backs of each frame had the year of the photo contained there-within). The frame is a darker oak so I used the darker colors of the Moroccan Designer Series Washi Tape. The tape includes 5 rolls per package which includes 1 each of 5 designs in 3 widths (3/8″, 1/2″, 5/8″ (1 cm, 1.3 cm, 1.6 cm)) for a total of 5 yards (4.6 m) per roll. In total I used very little and could do 2 frames if needed.

Tape length and wrapI used alternating patterns, and added a black tape I had sitting around. The piece of washi tape required to cover the frame measured about 4 inches, but would depend on the frame you choose. The most difficult part was to keep everything lined up and the seams were clean and even. It is also important to make sure the wood did not show through.

Prior to a varnishI went around the frame alternating the patterns. The corners were challenging at first, but once you do one, the rest are easy. Once completed I gave it a clear coat of matte finish varnish to seal it and also to make sure the tape stays down for the long-term. I let it dry and then applied a second coat.

Dry EraseAfter the frame was dry, I took glass cleaner and gave the outside one cleaning and began stacking my pieces.

Dry Erase Board CompleteAs you can see once completed the result is a cute dry erase board from an otherwise useless old photo frame.
