Sock Club – November 2015 – Review & Giveaway

November Sock ClubI have always been fascinated by the mere miracle that is aviation. The concept that a metal object that weighs anywhere from thousand to hundreds of thousands of pounds is able to fly is the definition of a miracle. When I think back I think my fascination is from my father and his previous career as a  pilot. Rumor has it that when I was a fussy baby instead of a car ride to calm me, my father would take me up on his plane for a flight. The result apparently was a instantly calmed baby.

Due to this love of aviation the story and mythology of Howard Hughes equally fascinates me. The legacy that Howard Hughes left was more emotional than physical and it was the legacy of dreaming. When you think of dreams and Howard Hughes, the one thing that comes to mind is the Spruce Goose. The Spruce Goose was only in flight once, for a total of 70ft off the surface of the ocean.

In honor of the November 2nd, 1947 flight, the 69th anniversary, of Howard Hughes maiden and only flight of the Spruce Goose, SockClub decided that this would be the inspiration behind the November sock.

I received a pair called “The Hughes”. The socks were packaged in a 8×11 “Sock Club” branded cardboard envelope.  When I opened the envelope I found the wrapped brown bag package with a wax seal in the middle, which is designed as a closure. As with previous review package’s I received from Sock Club had a letter that explained the inspiration behind the months selection. This month the letter was included and was a nice addition to hear why they chose the sock design they chose.

November Sock Club On Feet and AloneThe Hughes sock is a blue based sock with crosses in shades of blue and yellow throughout the sock as you go toward the foot. The top of the socks have a 3 inch band of turquoise and a 1/2 inch dark blue trim on top. The socks went up my calf about halfway between my ankle and knee. The label stated that the sock was made up of 80% cotton, 16% nylon and 4% lycra, so there will be little shrinkage. This was a comfortable sock that was thin like a traditional dressing sock. The thin nature of the sock allows it to be worn with just about any shoe without adding additional bulk.

I really appreciate the fact that the inspiration was a little known date of important aviation history. The crosses throughout the design is meant to be reminiscent of the propellers on a plane as well as the blue of the ocean. This is a great, comfortable sock that honors a man who continues to encourage us all to dream.

Anything with a print and knee high gets my vote for favorite. 🙂 I don’t have a specific pair I like more than the others.

I’m afraid I don’t have a favorite pair since all I have is a bunch of black socks that I bought in bulk. Perhaps its time to invest in some more amusing socks.
