Little Pink Ladybug: Brilliant Bowmaker – Ultimate Kit Review and Giveaway
I have a confession – I am a ribbon addict. I love to collect ribbon and I love to acquire ribbon. In my craft room I have a clear storage box that is full of random lengths, textures and designs of ribbon. If I am in the store and I happen to see a ribbon that catches my eyes, it is a safe assumption that a couple of yards will be added to my collection.
The origination of the ribbon collection are a bit murky, but if I had to guess it was due to my love of scrapbooking and gift wrapping. Now, despite having all this ribbon at my disposal, I rarely find uses for it, which is a sad reality that I strive to change with each craft project I take on.
The thing that I love the most about crafting is the constant use of different textures and mediums – ribbon included. There is no place that this fact than at the annual Craft and Hobby Mega Show, and the various vendors displaying their own take on creativity. While there I had the opportunity to see Little Pink Ladybug and their solution to all the ribbon I currently am collecting.
Little Pink Ladybug is the creator of the Brilliant Bowmaker – Bow Making System and a booklet to Basketweave a headband, to name a few. After the show, they sent me each of the items for review.
The first item I decided to play with was the Brilliant Bowmaker – Bow Making System Ultimate Kit that includes (8) Classic templates, (5) Surround templates, (5) Snap templates, (1) nine dimension Size Guide, (3) Spiral Bound Instruction and Idea Manuals (Classic templates, Surround templates and Snap templates), (1) Bow Stapler with (1) staple refill pack.
The first thing that I noticed was that despite the kit being the combination of 3 of Little Pink Ladybugs the contents were well-organized and easy to identify which templates went with each manual.
The manuals are spiral bound, which when you are crafting is nice so that the book lies flat. Each book has a clear sheet on the front, and a comprehensive table of contents. As you thumb through the book you will learn the supplies needed (ribbon, scissors, an adhesive – glue to glue gun to name a few), the differences between the ribbons (grograin vs satin), and misc. techniques to cut and seal the ends.
One of the important elements is ribbon, and this book makes sure you are comfortable and informed. There is a table of information that tells the crafter how much ribbon each template will need depending on width, for the final desired size – 1.5″ to 7″.
I chose to burn the ends of my ribbon to seal the ends from fraying which seemed to be seamless and effective. What I liked it that each template says the recommended length of ribbon needed for that template.
The instructions are in color and with each step is a photo, which made all the difference for me while learning. I say it only took a couple of bow and I began to feel like and expert. The book’s have multiple options for connecting and cinching your bow, including how to do knots to finish the bow off.
As the progression through the manuals continues the introduction of different variations of the basic bow are introduced which allows for more creativity and flexibility. There are instruction on creating a double layer bow, a long tail bowย and a cheer bow. Also covered are multi-ribbon bows and stacked bows.
The other item that I got to create were a couple of ribbon covered headband with the Basketweave Headband Instructions. This was a PDF that arrived via email, and was 40 pages of full color instructions.
Similar to the bound books of the Ultimate Kit, each step was in full color and easy to follow. I was really over-whelmed when I began my first headband, and I can say that after my first couple weaves, my nerves eased and I began to see the colors combine.
The instruction inform the crafter of the length of ribbon needed and the supplies needed (a plain headband, ribbon, scissors, hot glue fun and a lighter). There are 10 variations on the basket weaving and include striped patterns, as well as textured and dimensional weaves and a basic 4/5 color weave and checkerboard.
I ended up making 3 different headbands, despite my plan to only create 1 – they are simple and are full of originality. I love that I can create a completely unique headband, that is not only handcrafted but is full of color.
Also available is a Scrap Pack which is a tinier kit that allows you to make bows for card making and scrapbooking.
I discovered quickly that bow making is not only fun, but really addictive! I have been wondering for years (or decades) what the fate of all my ribbon would be, I think I can finally and securely answer that now – bow making.
