The Hippie Hobby Box: DIY String Art Review

The Hippie Hobby Box: String Art Review + Giveaway

Whenever I have the opportunity to review a DIY box, I get excited since I am a crafter and DIY gal at heart.

Being a Do It Yourself girl, I do not see trash, I see an opportunity to up-cycle an item. The reality is that I am often busy, and at times do not get to do the things I set out to due to time constraints.

Each month when I receive the newest The Hippie Hobby Box I get excited because this is the simplest way to do a craft that I otherwise would not have the time to do. I noticed was this was a simple way to introduce DIY’ers to a craft they otherwise may not do. Each month the spirit of DIY and up-cycling are fused into one monthly do-it-yourself project with this monthly kit.

The products featured in this post were provided to me free of charge courtesy of Hippie Hobby Box. This post may have affiliate links but this in no way will influence the review to follow and all opinions are my own.

What is The Hippie Hobby Box exactly? The Hippie Hobby box is a every other month Do It Yourself kit with a hippie twist. Each box features up-cycled, recycled or natural product that includes almost everything needed to complete the project (standard items like scissors and bowls are not included).

Included in the DIY String Art Kit were (3) Wood Planks, (1) Paint Brush, (2) Instant Coffee Packets, (1) Saw Tooth Hanger with nails, (6) 13mm Mini Nails, (2) 9″ Paint Sticks, (55-60) Wire Nails and (3) Skeins of Embroidery Floss. Also needed but not included was Scissors, (1) Small bowl (for the instant coffee stain) and a Hammer.

The basic idea of this kit is to create a string art piece. The box came with two patterns – an ampersand and an arrow. Each of the smaller elements came numbered and separated by a seal. This kept all the necessities in one place, and the bags helped keep the nails from going everywhere.

The first step is to mix the Instant Coffee with water to create the stain that will be used on the wood. I used the recommended 2 Tablespoons water, and the result was a nice dark stain. I did notice while i was painting the wood, at times the stain went on lighter than I expected, but the end result after it dried was a nice dark stain. I would recommend putting something under the stained blocks, to prevent getting coffee stains everywhere.

The second step was to use the stirrers and attached the 3 planks together from the back. I found this step very difficult due to the nails used. While I tried to use the nails to nails these planks on the back, I could not get the nail through the stick. This provided me much more frustration than I wanted I opted to use the larger of the nails.

This plan almost backfired when I began to nail the ampersand on the front and almost ran out of nails. This did not happen, and I ended up having JUST enough nails for everything.

As I began to wrap the ampersand, I realized that this would take me a bit more time to fill in to my satisfaction. There was a variegated green string included in my box, which I found worked really nicely and gave a wonderful coloring. I have always wanted to try to do a string art project, and this was the perfect toe dip into this new craft.

If you are looking for fun DIY project, delivered to your door I would HIGHLY recommend you ordering a Hippie Hobby Box.

I would like to learn how to do ribbon embroidery and candlewick embroidery.

Stained glass would be cool to do, but it sounds and looks complicated and expensive, and I’d want to do something incredible that belongs in a medieval church.

We are going to try the wood string art. Currently I’m trying to re-teach myself how to crochet!
