Back to the Roots: Garden-in-a-Can Basil + Cilantro Review

Ever since we started cooking our own dinners and relying on pre-packaged meals less, the addition of spices and herbs is forefront in the cooking process.

In light of the fact that we love cooking with fresh herbs, we had begun toying with the idea of growing our own herbs. The problem with this was that we live in a smaller home, and storage and space to grow is not only limited but homeowners regulations are abound about planting. Since we have a nice size porch, we decided that we could dedicate an area on the top and bottom levels towards our own herb gardens. Each time we attempted this either dirt was an issue, weather knocking pots over was the problem or our own lack of a green thumb.

Being a fan of simplicity, and believing that timing is everything, was approached by a company called Back to the Roots, and in addition to selling items like mushroom farms, and farmhouse sets, they also sell Garden-in-a-Can. When I looked at these self-contained can’s I began to see our own grown herbs as a real option in our cooking.

The products featured in this post were provided to me free of charge courtesy of Back to the Roots. This post may have affiliate links but this in no way will influence the review to follow and all opinions are my own.

I received a can of Back to the Roots Garden-in-a-Can Basil and a can of Cilantro.

The first item I decided to grow was the Garden-in-a-Can Sweet Basil, and it was simpler right from the get-go than typical herb gardening. Included in the can was the soil needed, as well as the seeds and simple instructions.

The instructions were simple, and required me opening the seed package and pouring it in. I watered the small amount required and set it in a nice safe sunny spot. Sadly it has been a couple of weeks and I have seen nothing, not a sprout. I am not sure if I just chose a bad time of year, although is there a bad time in California?

I still have the Garden-in-a-Can Oregano, which I plan to plant closer to Springtime, and am hopeful for different results, and will update the review at that time if the results are different.

Despite my lack of herbs, I still love the idea behind this can, and plan to give it another try. I am also interested in their Mushroom Farm, as we are HUGE mushroom fans around here.

Each of these cans are USDA certified organic and are Non-GMO, feature organic seeds, 100% USA made nutrient soil and seeds. Using biochar technology to help the herbs grow and contain no messy drainage holes, no chemicals and best of all no transplanting needed – perfect for smaller homes!

If you are wanting to garden, but are low on space or green thumb I would recommend these Garden-in-a-Can’s. They are simple, easy to store and are natural!
