The Hippie Hobby Box: DIY Book Page Gem Magnets Review and Giveaway
I am a crafter. I have an entire room dedicated to my crafts, and despite my best efforts that is not enough at times. I tend to lean towards a couple different craft specialties including DIY’s. I love to up-cycle items and re-cycle items that are otherwise deemed unusable.
Due to my propensity to DIY and saving, there is an accumulation of items that are otherwise trash to others. I realize this makes it sound like I am hoarding trash, and that is not the case at all. I simply keep items such as wine corks, glass jars (although I limit myself to one banker’s box worth) as well as any boxes that can be re-covered and used as storage of my random items for “cycling”.
I have thought many times that a monthly box that utilized the spirit of up-cycling and re-cycled craft genre would be a lot of fun. I often speak of luck and this review has a little bit of luck included in that my idea was a reality in the form of The Hippie Hobby Box.
What is The Hippie Hobby Box exactly? The Hippie Hobby box is a every other month Do It Yourself kit with a hippie twist. Each box features up-cycled, recycled or natural product that includes almost everything needed to complete the project (standard items like scissors and pen/pencils are not included).
Included in the Gem Magnets kit were (8) Large Glass Gems, (8) .75″ Craft Magnets, Modge Podge, Book Pages from and old book, Foam Brush and Super Glue. Also needed for craft completion, but not included, are scissors and a pen or pencil for tracing glass gem form.
As an added bonus there is an additional project called Cupcake Toppers that included toothpicks, Modge Podge, Book Pages, Glitter. Also needed but not included were tape and scissors. This project requires you to make a heart-shaped template and then use that to cut the shape from the book pages, and adhere it to the toothpick, If you want you can added the enclosed glitter to add a pop of shimmer.
The basic idea of the magnet kit is to use the book pages to use as a background and glue them to the gems, and then glue the magnet on with the Super Glue. I decided to play around with my potential background from the seemingly vintage book pages. I finally decided on my background and placed the gem down to trace the shape. Once I had the shape, I simply used my scissors to remove that shape from the page. The adhesion is simple, and involved putting the Modge Podge on the stone’s flat side, and placing the cut shape on top of the layer of adhesive. I then put a layer over the page and the stone and placed it to the side to dry.
I decided to wait a couple of hours, mostly because I wanted to confirm the Modge Podge would have time to set. Once the Modge Podge was dry, I put a small dot down and placed the magnets on the flat side. Despite it being quick drying glue, I still let it set for about an hour before I put them into the rotation on my refrigerator.
The results were 8 completely different clear gem magnet’s that were easy and that look like I purchased them in an upscale boutique.
I wish i could express to you how much fun this project was! I had *always* wanted to make some magnets but was afraid of the time and potential money investment for a project. As it turns out, this was simple, and unique – no two magnets will be the same. If you are looking for fun DIY project, delivered to your door I would HIGHLY recommend you ordering a Hippie Hobby Box.
