Dia de los Muertos Coloring Book Review

Dia de los Muertos: Day of the Dead & Sugar Skull Coloring Book Review and Giveaway

Dia De Los Muertos Adult Coloring BookI am a little over 40 years old and overall I have experienced very little loss in my life. Oddly the I have experienced more loss in the past couple years than the previous 38 years. Sadly I lost both of of my grand mothers within a year of each other.

My father’s mother, my grandmother Shirley, was an extraordinary lady and attended ophthalmology school in a time not only dominated by men, but a men’s profession. After she graduated she married, had 2 boys and had her own successful practice. Sometime in the late 1980’s she sold her practice and moved 2,000 miles away to be closer to her boys and their kids. I can honestly say she never missed a moment in my life, knew my friends and if I knew it or not, she moved here to be with me.

I try to honor her memory each day in some special way, be it a thought, or just knowing she loved me. There is a tradition in the Mexican culture that honors the dead each year in the form of Dia de los Muertos. In celebration of this yearly tradition come the coloring book Dia de los Muertos: Day of the Dead and Sugar Skull by Blue Star Coloring is a great way to celebrate the “Day of the Dead”. Dia de los Muertos: Day of the Dead and Sugar Skull Coloring Book by Blue Star Coloring contains over 30 skulls to color. Each skull in this coloring book range in line thickness but sticking with the theme. The images in the book contain a cat or two, mustaches and the potential for bright colors.

Dia del los Muertos PagesWhen I think of Dia de los Muertos I think of bright colors and celebration. This yearly multi-day celebration takes place in Mexico. Each year the focus is to gather people to remember those that we have lost as well as supporting the dead’s spiritual journey. Each October 31st to November 2nd toys are bought for deceased children and tequila is brought for adults. At each celebration there is dancing, generally in the town square, and in colorful costumes with masks. Some people believe that having these masks can be good luck.

There is a downside is that the books does not lie flat. If you open the book wide and press down on the interior spine you might be able to crack the binding. Otherwise the book will not stay open on it’s own and making coloring a little more challenging.

Jennifer Coloring awayIf you want to remove the pages please note that the book is binded much like traditional books are, so take care when removing the pages. I use my typical recommendation which is to be cautious when tearing or removing the page or use a cutting device such as scissors or a craft knife to get the page out. Many of the pages cut close to the binding so take extra care when removing pages.

My usual recommendation applies for this Day of the Dead Coloring book. I placed a piece of paper under the page I was coloring to avoid bleeding through to other pages or creating impressions on the following pages. I used a smattering of Bic fine tip pens that I had sitting around, which ended up quite colorful. Please remember, if you do not let the image dry you run the risks of smudging your piece of art.

Our family tradition is to celebrate Christmas in January. Everyone is so busy with their own families and in-law families in December that we just plan to get together in January and take the stress off!

The first bite of pie, the triangle must be saved for the last bite and you make a wish. We have birthday pie more often than birthday cake.

What a great idea making a coloring book of a celebrated day, “Dia de los Muertos.” The colors will surely bring out the mystical vibes.

My family doesn’t really have one. So I started some with my kids. I try to every thursday to give them a “themed” bath! Like, for example for Easter I made some Easter cut outs from foam, a Easter Basket, eggs, etc. and purple colored water with Easter Eggs in their water. Just to make their childhood last a while.
