A Week With The 2017 Mazda CX-9 Signature AWD – A Review
I was provided an opportunity to test drive the 2017 Mazda CX-9 Signature Edition through DriveShop for a week – no compensation was provided and all opinions are my own.
As a blogger I get some very fun and unique opportunities so when I was given the opportunity to test drive the new 2017 Mazda CX-9 Signature AWD, I jumped at the chance. Given that we were given a car, we decided to take it into the mountains, and give it a little off road time and see how it handled in this curvy road conditions.
The 2017 Mazda CX-9 Signature AWD (All Wheel Drive) was impressive from the moment I saw it. The Machine Grey Metallic and 20″ Alloy Wheels made the car look distinguished yet approachably drivable. The car seats 5 comfortably with an optional 2 additional seats in the rear that fold down to extend trunk space when not in use.
The sticker states that the car gets 20 miles per gallon in the city, and 26 on the highway. While I can not attest to the accuracy of this claim, I can say that we drove a couple hundred miles over the course of the week. Within this week we drove in a variety of road conditions (stop and go traffic, curvy mountains, freeway and city streets) and seven days later we had a tad under half a tank remaining.
The 2.5 turbo engine gave the car power, while remaining a smooth drive. The car was comfortable for me to drive, and while I loved the feeling on the road, I never felt the car was to much to handle.
There were many things I really liked about the 2017 Mazda CX-9 Signature AWD such as –
Rear Camera: Until recently I had only had experience with back up cameras as a passenger. The 2017 Mazda CX-9 features a 8″ color display with a rear camera. The vertical lines are the approximate width of your vehicle, and represent a square. The top line (furthest away) is about 8.9 feet from the rear bumper, the middle line is from the rear bumper. Since I parallel park into my parking spot, this camera made it simple about 3.3 feet from the rear bumper and the red line tells you that there is only about 1.5 feet of room. This eliminated the need of me having to watch the wall on my right.
Trunk Space: The one thing I have been hearing is that bringing home groceries and other shopping with a SUV is exponentially easier and after driving this for a week, I am inclined to agree. As it happened, I ended up with a huge bag of cat food, and a case of water, and even after loading over $150.00 in groceries I still had room to spare.
Automatic Trunk Opening: With one button the trunk opens with the greatest of ease, which made the above loading and unloading much simpler. The entire process from pushing button to complete opening was about 7 seconds. When you use the FOD, you can also open this remotely, which makes for easy opening as well.
Keyless Entry and Push Button Start: The 2017 Mazda CX-9 features an Advanced Keyless Entry system, as well as a keyless start. As the driver approaches the car, the car senses the presence of the key and allows entry. The Mazda features Push Button start system and an electronic parking brake, which was strange at first, but quickly became one more thing to press before exiting the vehicle.
Navigation: Utilizing the same screen that the back-up camera uses, the 2017 Mazda CX-9 Signature AWD has a full color display that uses arrows and voice to navigate. The directions are also utilized in the Active Driving Display, which puts the speed, posted speed and navigation on the windshield for the driver to see.
Interior: The interior of the 2017 Mazda CX-9 Signature AWD is made with a Red Nappa Leather. The driver’s seat is all power and features lumbar adjustments. The driver seat also features driver seat memory with two memory positions – perfect for two driver households. Each front seat is heated and the passenger seat is also power-driven. The seats were comfortable on our drive and while there could be a little more leg room in the front passenger, unless you are over 6’5 this may not be a concern.
Sound: When I drive I like to have a variety of music and the 2017 Mazda CX-9 Signature AWD definitely accommodated that desire. The music can be from your phone, AM/FM radio, satellite radio as well as other online services. The music comes from 12 Bose Speakers placed throughout the car and features such as Aux Jacks and USB Jacks to plug-in directly.
Commander Control: The 2017 Mazda CX-9 Signature AWD features a commander control center that features the shifter, the push button emergency brake, volume control, easy buttons to get to the music screens, navigation as well as a dial to make your selections on the screen. I have to admit this Commander Control really did make me feel like I was in charge.
Prior to this test drive I had never driven a Mazda, despite being a driver for over 36 years and owning a variety of over 10 different cars. I was very impressed from the moment the car was dropped off to the moment that they drove it away.
In the end the 2017 Mazda CX-9 Signature AWD is a SUV that is full of features and luxury at a price point that might be a bit more affordable than the luxury SUV’s can cost. If you are in the market for a car that has all the luxury without the price be sure to check out the 2017 Mazda CX-9 Signature AWD.
