Treats Box Subscription Review and Giveaway – Japan Box
The one thing that having a review blog does is force the reviewer outside of their comfort zone, and experience something they may not have had they not completed the review. At least that is the case for me, each day my comfort limits are tested to some degree.
Something that I want to do in my lifetime that pushes those comfort zone limits is travel to Japan. I am asked frequently why Japan of all places, and the answer is really a simple one – to see and taste new things. There is something about Japanese culture that is much more adventurous than the United States. I am not in a position to travel the 5,600 miles away (but this could change next year – I will keep you posted), but I can still experience the food of Japan in the form of Treats Monthly Subscription Box.
The Treats Monthly Subscription Box is a monthly subscription service specializing in international snack boxes. Each month you will receive a different country and the items will range from candy, crackers, chips, cookies, chocolate and more! I received the Japan box for review and it was full of treats including:
Kasugai – Fruit Gummy Assortment: The first thing that caught my attention with these were that they were individually wrapped within the package. These gluten-free gummies came in three flavors including Lychee, Mango and Strawberry. The Lychee was an unfamiliar flavor for me as I have not tried much Lychee, but the Mango and Strawberry reminded me of their respective flavors. These do not taste like the gummies we are used to here in the United States but they are still good.
Glico – Giant Caplico Strawberry: When I saw this cone shape in the box I began wondering what was inside this package and I was not expecting a cone. This is what you see is what you get – it is a wafer type cone filled with chocolate and topped with strawberry. It reminded me of an ice cream cone but with a non ice cream texture.
Jagabee – Butter Soy Sauce Potato Crisps: The first thing that I think will also get your attention, as it did mine, is that these are remarkably similar to what is known as french fries. These reminded me of a cut potato and oddly enough they also tasted that way. The soy sauce flavor was very prominent, and the butter less so. They did not have an oily residue and they were crispy as well as being something different then we normally snack on.
Calbee – Baked Shrimp Chips: This is the second fry shaped item in the box and really outside my comfort zone. The best way to describe these is they are like a crispy puffed shrimp. There was little salt and they were pretty much simple shrimp chips. I would say if you like shrimp give these a try.
Uha – Cola Puccho: My first impression of these is that they were a version of cola. They were chewy and had a white substance and little balls in the core of the candy which added to the overall flavor. If you are a fan of cola, give these a try!
Glico – Pocky Tsubu Tsubu: These are best described as biscuit sticks with strawberry crème on almost 75% of the stick. This reminded me of the crème used in Oreo’s middles with a strawberry twist. If this level of sweetness is your thing, then I would recommend you giving them a try!
Amanoya – Himemaru: I am sure you are thinking what I was – these look like tater tots! I immediately thought that they reminded me of crispy tater tots. These did not disappoint and were very similar to that potato round we know. There was a slight red seasoning on the top although I was unable to figure out what that was, but they were tasty.
Morinaga – Milk Caramel: If you are expecting something similar to the caramels you grew up with then I think you may suffer a level of disappointment on this one. This did remind me of caramel and these were little individually wrapped squares. If you like caramel I would recommend giving these a try.
Uegaki – Kaki-no-tane: These are spicy little crackers would be so good on a salad – at least that is our plan with them. These leave no oily residue on hands and these were crisp and tasty. I plan to use these on a Asian salad in the near future.
Included in the box was a post card explaining the name of the snacks and that they were from Japan, along with a picture of the item for easy identification. These were some of the most unique snacks I have ever had and has inspired me to want to travel to Japan even more to experience some additional culture and snacks.
I encourage you all to give this box a try – it is fun to get to try something new without leaving your home!
There are 2 options available The Standard pack which includes 4-5 snacks for a monthly cost of $12.95/month – month to month and a Premium pack which includes 8-10 snacks for a monthly cost of $24.95/month – month to month and shipping is included in the cost each month for United States recipients. For Canadians/International an additional cost per box for shipping applies depending on destination (see site for details).
