Orivet: Feline DNA Testing Review & a Giveaway

There is no doubt that Maggee chose us, when we went into the room to “get to know”: her she jumped in my lap and then my husbands. We took that as a very definite move towards he choosing us.
Not a lot was known about our girl, we know she was shuttled between homes due to issues beyond her control, and had a litter of kittens. We both love our girl so much, we want to know more about her including her health and hereditary things that can affect her.
When I had the opportunity to get her DNA tested by Orivet I was super excited to glean a little more about a creature that I really know nothing about.
The products featured in this post were provided to me free of charge courtesy of Orivet.
I received the Cat DNA Health Screen & Life Plan for testing.

Since I had done human DNA tests, I was expecting a much bigger package than I received, which was a large envelope that contained 2 swabs, bar code stickers, form for results to be forwarded to Maggee’s vet and instructions.

The basic idea is that the kit comes with 2 swabs which gives double the opportunity for your cat to be displeased with you. The swabs just need to go into the cheek – the inside of where the whiskers are is a good location. Once you get the cheek located you just have to swab to cats cheek for 10 seconds, put in in a safe place to dry and do the second swab the same way. I propped them on a couple of pumpkins for 10 minutes to dry.

Once the swabs are dry, it is as simple as placing the swabs in back in the sleeve they came in, filling out the shipping address, placing the bar code to seal the sleeve, and sending in the mail. I did have to pay for postage, but overall this was 2 stamps, which isn’t to bad, i would have liked to see a postage paid envelope for the cost of the kit.
After about 2-3 weeks I received a email that my test results were ready. While there were few surprises. Maggee had a bit of Maine Coon in her. It appears as though she is prone to things that only Maine Coons are prone to. We also learned that she is type A blood.
The Cat DNA Health Screen & Life Plan tests for a wide variety of items such as Acute Intermitent Porphyria, Agouti, Albinism – Siamese, Alpha Mannisidosis, Amber, Blood Groups, Chocolate & Cinnamon, Chylomicronemia (Lipoprotein Lipase Deficiency), Colourpoint Restriction (Siamese/Burmese), Curly Coat – Cornish Rex, Curly Coat – Selkirk Rex, Cystinuria (SLC3A1), Devon Rex Coat, Dilute, GM1 – Gangliosidosis, Glycogen Storage Disease Type IV, Haemophilia B, Hereditary Retinal Degeneration PRA (CEP290), Hyperoxaluria (GRHPR), Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy – Maine Coon, Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy – Ragdoll, Hypokalaemia Periodic Polymyopathy – Burmese, Lipoprotein Deficiency (LPL), Long Hair / Short Hair, Mucopolysaccharidosis Type I, Mucopolysaccharidosis Type VI (D520N) NO ASSOCIATION (MILD FORM), Mucopolysaccharidosis Type VI (L467P) – SEVERE FORM, Myopathy (COLQ), Myotonia Congenita (Feline),Neurodegenerative Lysosomal Storage Disease, Niemann-Pick Disease – Sphingomyelinosis, Polycystic Kidney Disease, Preaxial Polydactyl, Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency (Feline), Sphynx (KRT71 Variant), Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Vitamin D Rickets and White Gloves (Birman Pattern).
While I still have many questions about my girl at least I know what she is susceptible to from a health stand point we will be able to warn her vet. As pet guardians it is important to be the voices for our pets and with the Orivet Cat DNA Health Screen & Life Plan we can be the voice our pets need.

Having two dogs and a cat, I always worry about pain and if they are hurting. So, I would wish they could say if they hurt; joints, stomach, etc.
