The Hippie Hobby Box – DIY Melt & Pour Soap Review

The Hippie Hobby Box: DIY Melt & Pour Soap Review + Giveaway

finished-soapEach month I have the opportunity to review a couple different boxes, and of those the ones that make allow me to create something are among my favorite.

Soap making has always been on my craft “to-do” list, but the idea of using lye has always been a bit overwhelming to me. While I often have the chance to make candles, the art of soap making has been a little out of my sights.

When I received the newest The Hippie Hobby Box I was excited to see that this boxes craft was soap making. What I noticed was this was a simple easy way to make the soap I have been fearful of making otherwise. Each month the spirit of DIY and up-cycling are fused into one monthly do-it-yourself project with this monthly kit.

The products featured in this post were provided to me free of charge courtesy of Hippie Hobby Box. This post may have affiliate links but this in no way will influence the review to follow and all opinions are my own.

What is The Hippie Hobby Box exactly? The Hippie Hobby box is a every other month Do It Yourself kit with a hippie twist. Each box features up-cycled, recycled or natural product that includes almost everything needed to complete the project (standard items like a mason jar, hot pad, cooking spray, stir sticks and container to hold candles are not included).

diy-melt-and-pour-soap-contentsIncluded in the DIY Melt & Pour Soap was 6 oz Goat Milk Soap Base, 1/4 teaspoon of Organic Japanese Matcha Green Tea Powder, 2 Tablespoons Lavender Flowers – Ultra Blue Grade, 2 Tablespoons Rolled Oats, 1 packet of Granulated Sugar, 5/8 dram of Peppermint Essential Oil, 1/4 Dram Sunflower Oil, 3 Mini Loaf Pans and 3 Wooden Craft Sticks. Also needed but not included is a Pyrex Bowl, Spoon and Hot Pad.

diy-upcycled-soap-instructionsAlso included to complete the Bonus Craft of DIY Up-cycled Soap were the items needed for any dinner party including Burlap Ribbon, Mini-Loaf Pans, (3) Round Kraft Stickers, (2) Embroidery Floss Skien, Canvas Bag. Also needed but not included Cling Wrap and Scissors.

The basic idea of this kit is to create 3 handmade soaps. The soap base element of the ingredient’s were pre-measured in a packet – this made the melting of wax and measuring easy. I started with a 30 second timer and went from there until the base was melted.

melted-wax-in-pyrexOnce the soap base was melted, the oil is added. Once the base is mixed you place the oats, the matcha and sugar on the base of the loaf pans. Once places the pouring begins, and once complete a little more of either the sugar, oats or matcha is added.

soap-hardneded-in-packageI carefully placed my poured soap in the refrigerator and waiting 30 minutes for the soap to harden. Once hardened I removed it from them loaf pans and wrapped them in plastic wrap.

a-side-view-of-oatmeal-soapAs a finishing I took the suggestion of up-cycling the materials to wrap the soap for gift giving. The end result is 3 super cute handmade bars of soap that I know my recipient will love.

This was a fun, simple, and unique project. If you are looking for fun DIY project, delivered to your door I would HIGHLY recommend you ordering a Hippie Hobby Box.
