Allton Tape: Go Washi

One of the things I always love to do is find inexpensive ways to add a pop of color to an otherwise white-walled area. The problem with renting is that you can not paint, you can not remodel and certainly can lose a security deposit with little to effort on your part.
I would love to sit here and tell you that the advantage of owning a home is that you can do all these removal items, but the fact of the matter remains that you still have to pay for it. I have discovered that even the smallest of home upgrades can cost more than you anticipate so I am always looking for cost-effective ways to upgrade without doing into debt.
A couple of years ago I heard of a trend coming over from Japan that involved the same paper that is used for origami but made into a versatile, strong and durable tape. Since then, I have had little interaction with Washi tape, but each interaction I have had, as been positive. It goes without saying that when I saw a company called Allton Tape that specialized in Washi tape at CHA 2016 (Craft and Hobby Association Show) I was intrigued and curious. In the above photo from left to right it is a variety Fruit, Flower and Yellow-Orange Pop Washi tape.
As I embarked on my Washi tape adventure I began thinking of ways and places to add color to my home – there are not as many places that need a pop of color but they are there. I decided that I could redo a vase, a notebook or the light plate switch covers.
What is Washi tape exactly? Washi tape is a paper tape, similar to a Japanese hand-made paper, that originated in Japan in the mid 2000’s. I like to think of this as similar of masking tape but much prettier and much more versatile. This unique tape is a bamboo and hemp made from the bark of trees native to Japan. The trees used included the Mulberry tree, Mitsumata shrub and Gampi Tree bark.
I decided that one of the best use of this colorful and decorative tape was to recover a couple of my light switch plates. The process is simple as it really only involves unscrewing the plate from the wall, I choose to clean the plate and I also made sure that it was dry before adhering the Washi tape. I decided on the Summer themed tape and the pattern and began placing tape at alternative intervals and before I knew it I had a completed switch plate – I was addicted. I proceeded to do this to a bunch more switch plates throughout my house.
As you can see I decided that many of my light switch plates need some color. From the lower left around I used the following Washi tape sets: Coffee, Checkers, Flower, Yellow-Orange Pop and Cats. I decided the best place for the cat switch plate was where we feed the cats. Each on of these are bright, unique and most importantly sturdy on the plate. At no place is the tape coming up, nor do I need to worry about it.
I have been wanting a “H” for my craft room in an appropriate craft room theme, and with the Sewing Washi tape set I was able to achieve this. What I decided was to wait until I found a “H” that I was happy with and on sale, and at that time purchased it with the purpose of recovering it with this tape. As luck would have it I ended up with a good base color, but really it would not have mattered much since I planned to recover the surface.
The initial above is a really clean and is a really appropriate “H” for the sewing area of my craft room. Each Washi tape roll came in 5 meter long rolls that were 7mm, 12mm, 15mm and 25mm in length. I can tell you that this is a good amount of tape. I was able to do each of the above projects and I still had a ton of tape left on the rolls.
Also included on each box is a small sliver that allows you to dispense your tape directly from the package since the tape is on a circular tube inside the package. I found it easier to remove my tape, but I did use this dispenser my first couple times and it worked great! I love this little added feature on the box.

I use Washi Tape on my journals to tape items inside or to line the edges of the page to brighten it up. I never thought to use it on light switch or outlet covers though – that’s neat!
