Zevia Zero Calorie Soda Review

Zevia Zero Calorie Soda Review and Giveaway

Zevia shiftedJason and I have a ritual each night – shortly after he arrives home we get our drinks for the night and each one of us has a Cherry Coke. This is a horrible habit and we know how bad it is for us. We pad that with a lot of water and even sports drinks, yet we know we have to change this habit soon!

I was speaking to my father about this predicament that we are in and the topic that arose was that the come down from the daily caffeine jolt would make us irritable and grumpy. I figure a little irritability in exchange of our health was a fair deal. We began to cut our daily coke out, and replaced it with milk, juices and other drinks. Admittedly, Jason still has a morning coffee and I still have an energy drink now and again, but we are on the path.

During the initial discussion with my father, he mentioned that he had discovered a new soda that had all the flavors I knew, without the sugar and preservatives. The company he discovered was Zevia Zero Calorie Soda, founded in Seattle Washington in 2007. I reached out to them for a review sample and they generously sent me a case including 2 cans of 12 different flavor’s.

Zevia Zero Calorie Soda comes in 14 flavors including the following –Zevia 9

What makes Zevia Soda different is that it is a zero calorie, all natural soda and instead of sugar and artificial sweeteners the main sweeteners are Stevia This plant based sweetener, originally native to South America, has leaves 200 times sweeter than sugar and no calorie value or effect on blood glucose levels. In addition all of Zevia’s Stevia comes from 100% US crop’s. The second sweetener is Monk FruitA round, green fruit grown on lush vines in small farms in the sub-tropical climate of Asian hill sides. Harvested by hand to release its natural sweetness, Monk Fruit is 200 to 300 times sweeter than sugar but contains no calories or effect on blood glucose levels. The third sweetener is ErythritolA natural component of fruits, vegetables and grains. This is classified as a sugar alcohol, even though it is neither sugar nor an alcohol. It is gathered through a natural fermentation process, similar to yogurt and has absolutely no calories and is a zero on the glycemic index. In addition, all of Zevia’s sodas are Non-GMO Project verified and are all color free.

Let me share my thoughts about Zevia Zero Calorie Soda. I was initially excited to try this alternative to the unhealthy sodas that we normally consume. I was so excited that I wanted Jason to partake in this sampling process so I waited for a time when he was also available so that he would be able to offer his opinion. First thing is that I do love the packaging – the message is communicated clearly and the features of the soda are also highlighted on the can. Each can has a different color that differentiates each flavor contained there-in. When I opened each of the flavors, some were obvious by scent what the flavor was and others were a mystery.

Jason and I began our sampling with the Ginger Ale and we both are generally fans of ginger ale, it is our go to tummy settler. This did not taste like the ginger ale we knew and sadly we both noted an unpleasant aftertaste. We proceed to sample the Ginger Root Beer, Grape, Strawberry and Black Cherry all of which tasted like a watered down version of the flavor, while retaining the aftertaste. We continued on to the Cream Soda and I being a cream soda fan generally speaking was hopeful. I usually put my cream soda over vanilla ice cream, and sadly I could not imagine using this version for that purpose. The sampling continued to include Mountain Zevia, Cherry Cola and Dr. Zevia, which were lacking something that made them more of a cousin of their mainstream counterparts.

As the taste test continued we found that both of our tummies were upset, we imagine from the sips of all the different drinks we were sampling. Despite this minor inconvenience we pressed on to the Lemon Lime Twist, Grapefruit Citrus and Cola. The Lemon Lime Twist missed the mark on the lemon and the lime and the Grapefruit Citrus missed the pucker of grapefruit. As for our final sampling of the Cola, despite us wishing for an adequate replacement, we must continue our search.

I feel it important to mention that neither Jason or I are fans of Stevia sweetened items. If you happen to like the taste of Stevia and items sweetened with it, I would say to give the Zevia a try! I imagine if we liked the sweetener, this sampling may have gone differently.

I wish I would have liked these more, but the plus side is that my father will be receiving a nice assortment pack of his favorite sodas. As for Jason and I, we will endure the grumpiness and irritability knowing the greater good – someday finding a healthy soda alternative.
