Simple Mills: Vanilla Cake Review and Giveaway
We are coming upon the season of baking and the decorating of the baked treasures. I recall one year I bought a bunch of cookie decorating supplies for a party we were intending to attend. Once we arrived we were told that the little boy had gluten sensitivities and since we could not verify the origins of the supplies we had to err on the side of caution and not decorate.
This particular experience got me thinking, and as disappointed as I was after all my preparations, I began thinking how disappointed that little boy would have been to be left out. I wish I knew then what I know now about gluten, sensitivities and the true holiday spirit.
Since we are upon that season once again, I began looking for companies that were as simple on ingredients as possible, mostly with the goal of not excluding anyone in cookie decorating. I was thrilled when I discovered Simple Mills, and their simple mixes. When I reached out they were generous enough to send me a sample of their mixes, as I still want flavor with my treats.
Let me start by saying that the products featured in this post were provided to me free of charge courtesy of Simple Mills. This post may have affiliate links but this in no way will influence the review to follow and all opinions are my own.
I received the Simple Mills Vanilla Cake made of Almond Flour. I decided to make the cake as a trial run before I dive in and purchase the ingredients needed for decoration cookies. The first thing that I noticed was that the mix is made of only 6 ingredients including almonds, Organic Coconut Sugar, Arrowroot Powder, Organic Coconut Flour, Baking Soda and Sea Salt – that is ALL!
When you open the package, you find the dry mix and are required to add only a couple of ingredients (eggs, water, oil and vanilla). I added the wet and mixed the ingredients, the batter was not lumpy and poured easily into the glass pan I used to bake my cake in. The instructions recommended to bake the cake for 30-35 minutes at 350 degrees. I cooked mine at 350 degrees, but only needed 27 minutes to achieve the brown I got. I removed the cake from the pan when the cake had cooled and when I cut into the cake, it was crunchy on the side and moist in the center – almost a perfect bake!
While I did not know what to expect with such a simple mix that is Paleo-Friendly, Grain Free, Dairy Free (before egg addition), Soy Free, Low Carb, Gluten-Free and Non-GMO. I am very happy to say that it passed the taste test on this side, and I am going to be making some “Simple” cookies for the decorating.
Jason is going to make a lemon icing tomorrow for this cake, I will update in the comments how it come out. I encourage you all to look into Simple Mills and purchase some mixes for your home – I PROMISE you will love them!
Simple Mills has mixes such as Artisan Bread Mix, Banana Muffins Mix, Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix, Chocolate Muffin & Cake Mix, Pancake & Muffin Mix, Pizza Dough Mix, Pumpkin Muffin Mix and Vanilla Cake Mix.
