Labor of Love Co: DIY Soy Candle Kit Review and Giveaway
About 10 years ago I decided I wanted to make candles for my family, friends and for myself. I purchased books, and diligently read whatever I could find online about candle making.
I found the process long, and honestly quite dangerous – have you been burned by hot wax before? Needless to say that initial foray into candle making scared me and I decided to back off until the process was streamlined and not as complicated.
Recently Labor of Love Co reached out to me to review one of their DIY Soy Candle Boxes and since I enjoy making candles I accepted. I was also eager to see if the candle making process could be simplified and made with only the ingredients sent in a box.
The products featured in this post were provided to me free of charge courtesy of Labor of Love Co., but this in no way will influence the review to follow and all opinions are my own.
Labor of Love Co uses items in everyday life to make something magical, and in this case it is a DIY Soy Candle Kit.
The DIY Soy Candle Kit includes the following items needed to make these two candles;
– Step-by-step instructions with pictures
– Soy wax flakes
– 2 pre-tabbed wicks
– Fragrance oil: Honeysuckle Jasmine OR Apple Harvest (depending on choice)
– 2 8 oz. mason jars with lids
– Wooden stick
– 2 clothespins
– 2 handmade gift tags
The included instructions are very clear and are easy to follow, and in total have 6 instructions that encompass the entirety of what you need to know to create these candles.
When you melt wax it is recommended that you use a double broiler, but since I did not have one, I made an aluminum bowl from a pan we had. I use a small plastic bowl as my form and as lucky would have it this method worked perfectly.
After the wax was melted I added the entire bottle of Honeysuckle Jasmine essential oil. I thought that this was a lot for two candles, but it ended up working well and making my kitchen smell good.
I made sure the oil was mixed in well with my wax, and lucky for me the bowl I made also came with a pourer, which made the pouring easier when it came to adding the wax to the jars. It is recommended to place the wicks in first using a little wax to hold the wick to the bottom of the jar – I would advice doing this, it keeps the wick from additional movement when pouring the wax.
I was impatient and checking my candles often for hardness. I would say about 2 hours after that final pour things were finally starting to harden a little more, but I would advise waiting the 24 recommended hours before you use or burns these.
In the end I have two super cute candles that I made, and even though they come with a tag and twine for gift giving, I plan on keeping these for myself. I love the strong odor and there is a clean flame when they burn.
I loved creating this project, and am curious what is next for this DIY adventure they are creating.
