Crickers Crackers: Cricket Flour Crackers Review & Giveaway
Regular readers will know that many times I get my review items from items I see on television (what can I say, the television is on a lot around here with me being a blogger). One night Jason and I were watching a show called Food Fortunes and saw a company that was making crackers from crickets. All of a sudden Jason began to give me random cricket facts.
I will be honest when I tell you that I know little to nothing about crickets other than their 150 decibel noise that the make, which is the males mating call for the female. I decided to do some research about crickets and I learned a couple more interesting facts. One of the things that I learned was that you can hear a cricket chirp up to 500 meters away and they can
I have noticed a trend that is leaning towards the sustainable food, and the renewable nature of certain ingredients. When we saw crackers made from cricket flour we knew we had to try them. Crickers Crackers come in 3 varieties and are surprisingly tasty.
I receive three varieties of Crickers Crackers including the following:
As regular readers will know I am a lover of all creatures, crickets included so I had an initial concern about the way that they crickets met their demise. After some simple searching on their website, I discovered the process was much simpler and much more humane than I initially anticipated. The process is a lot simpler than you would initially imagine – the crickets are raised humanely at an Austin Texas cricket farm. The raised crickets are food grade and FDA compliant, and after cleaning they are dried to remove any moisture and then milled into flour.
I was interested in the step between the removing the moisture and the milling into flour and I learned that the process was humane. Crickets are cold-blooded and when there are cold the going into a stasis and basically when the surrounding temperature is lowered the insects simple go to sleep.
I did my taste test a little different this time in that I involved Jason’s parents in the taste test. It just so happened that my in-laws love to have crackers and cheese at night, so one night we trekked over there to share our newest find. As an accompaniment to the crackers we had mozzarella wrapped in salami and a nice block of Gouda cheese. We opened all the crackers and diligently tried each one. The Classic Sea Salt tasted a little of salt, but was very lightly applied. Once I paired this with the cheese, it was a normal cracker. The second one that we tried was the Rosemary Garlic, which again was light on the rosemary and the garlic – I would have wanted a bit more flavor. The final flavor that we tried the Everything Crackers and it resembled an everything bagel which was surprisingly tasty. I have to admit that there was a dryness to the cracker that made the consistency really different. I could not taste the cricket and unless you told me otherwise I would have not know the ingredient content.
The unique thing about these crackers, other than they are made from cricket flour, is that they are paleo-friendly, high protein, contain no gluten, contain no dairy, contain no soy, no grains and are organic.
If you are looking for a sustainable, unique and different cracker than I would have to say to give Crickers Crackers a try! There is something really neat to know that you are eating something that is sustainable and packed with nutrients. Up to 80% of the world’s nations eat insects, why not join them.
